It is quite simple to preserve fresh cut flowers, capturing their natural and vivid colors with very
little time, effort or materials. To find out more about how to preserve wedding flowers then keep
reading for simple tricks and tactics.
The first thing to do is to make a preserving powder. This is made from four parts Borax to one
part silica gel. Preserving powder can also be purchased pre-made. While these ingredients sound
foreign to most of us, your local crafts store or florist will supply both of these and can even provide
some helpful tips about flower preservation.
The best time to preserve a flower is immediately after it is picked. You will need to cut the flower
as close to the base as possible. Pour just enough powder to cover the bottom of a medium sized
airtight Tupperware container. Place the flower blossom face down on the powder. Pour more powder
until the flower is covered. Repeat this procedure until the container is full. Push tightly down on the
lid making sure to get out as much air as possible. If needed, add some tape to the edge of the
container to prevent air from coming in.
Place your container in a dry place for at least 4 weeks without opening it. If the container is opened
early it will damage the delicate flowers. Never store it outdoors and make sure it is kept at room
temperature. At the end of four weeks, remove the flowers from the container one at a time, very
carefully, blowing off the excess powder from the petals. Your flowers are now ready to be pressed
into a photo album or even put in-between decorative glass.
Preserving flowers is preserving memories. Nothing invokes the memories of a wedding or special
day quite like flowers, and by preserving their delicate petals; we can save these memories for
several years to come.
